So, the belt on the compressor and the turning of the compressor does nothing?

Eventually the clutch will go bad. Then you will need to disconnect the belt.

Yeah, and eventually your engine will go bad and you'll need to disconnect it too. Luckily, the leaning tower of power has a reputation for running long after it should have have died, and out lasting most everything else.

I had a locked up A/C compressor on my van just because I could buy belts that fit. Eventually the clutch took a crap and I had to get different brackets to run shorter belts.

All you needed to do was put a new bearing in the clutch, about $10.00

I have a factory a/c setup in my 70 duster with the slant six. The setup is complete, and it still blows air but not cold. Anyway, i dont use a/c for this car as i when i am driving it i want the windows down. What i want to know, should i remove the a/c setup from my slant? Will it give me any extra power, hp, etc? I would leave all the stuff inside and save the parts in case i ever sell the car (i doubt it). I dont want to bother taking it all off if it wont make any difference in performance. any advice?

If the compressor is not running, anyway, the only saving will be the result of the weight reduction.

i dont actually know if the compressor works or not, i have never even turned it on other than one time to see if it blew cold air. So, the belt on the compressor and the turning of the compressor does nothing?

I took all of the AC stuff out of my Volare years ago. You won't notice a "night and day" difference, but as has been pointed out, your car will weigh less. Plus, I like having less stuff under the hood. Yeah, I like driving with the windows down too.

AC compressor does nothing unless the clutch is engaged, and if the unit is working properly, the clutch engages without the AC on only occasionally when the heater is turned on to keep the compressor lubed and the system from drying out. Increased weigh is probably as negligible as a small child. Effect on mileage is probably zip, or at least so small as to be unmeasurable (putting an extra five pounds of air in your tires would probably have more positive effect on your mileage than screwing around with the AC). In short, unless the compressor clutch is frozen and causing the compressor to spin all the time, it's not hurting anything, why screw with it? Possibly it doesn't blow cold because it simply needs to be charged? Of course if that's the case you could always change out the O rings and dryer assembly, purge the system, add R134, and have it blow cold again for those hot summer days.
