The problem could be a number of things and we’ll need more information. Has it been tuned up recently? When was the carburetor last rebuilt? How old is the fuel pump? Have you tried anything that didn’t fix the problem? Does it skip? Does it smoke a lot? Can you smell gas? Did it start doing this overnight or did it get worse over time? Anything you can think of might help. Some easy things to check: Check that your air filter isn’t dirty. Check your oil and make sure you don’t have too much or that it smells like gas. Check if gas is leaking out of the weep hole in the bottom of the fuel pump. Look in the throat of the carburetor to see if gas is dripping into the intake after shut-down or after cranking. Check the spark plugs to see if they are wet or gobbed up with anything. Danny |

Need more info. What do you mean by "locking up"? Just that it stalls out, or that it won't crank? Sounds to me like a choke issue, although it could be a number of other items, as posted already. When was the last tuneup? Does it idle high, or not at all? Will it idle after warming up? Does it run fine when warm? |

Danny[/quote] well i but it from an older man who said it was rarely driven but i put in a new filter, new fuel pump, changed the sparks, i was thinking that it might be the allternatorallternator |

by "locks up"; do you mean the steering gets hard because of the lack of the power steering pump turning? And being 33 years old I doubt what you say "it has never been tuned up" what new filter did they change? How long ago? (there's more than 1 filter on that car that occasionally needs changing) As a baseline, (and because it sounds like the car could use it anyways) I'd change; distributor cap rotor plugs and wires, PCV valve air filter and gas filter and the PCV breather element in the valve cover. Regardless of how long ago they "say" that these parts have been replaced. and do an oil change. then report back. Sounds like a valve adjustment, check of timing, carb adjustment and maybe some belts and hoses would be a good idea as preventive maintenance, along with that. (better now than on the side of the road somewhere) |
