Hello,

I have a little electical problem, the hand of the alternator instrument moves around the mittle while driving. It goes a little up and down and up and down ....
When i switch on the headligt, the light intensity goes a little up and down , like the instrument shows.

What could that be ? A faulty voltage regulator ? The pre-owner installed a new alternator.

I have no Instruments light when switching on the headlight, but that could be the light switch ?

Probably, and poor ground/earth. Get a new-type voltage regulator, Standard #VR-128 from www.rockauto.com ( -->Start -->Part Number Search). There is a discount code for RockAuto here.

Install the new regulator, which is electronic and so looks slightly different from the original, but fits and works correctly. Then run a 2mm2 wire from the alternator body to the mounting base of the voltage regulator, and from there to the battery negative terminal.

Yes. A new headlight switch (Standard #DS-165) will probably fix this. You will probably want to install new light bulbs, too. I like to use type WY5W (Osram #2827, Philips #12396, Narva #17169).

Thank you for the information, I just ordered the regulator and Headlight switch. Today I got it, but on the case of the regulator no description how to plug the wires. pherhaps it doesn't matter how the cables are connected to the regulator?

p.s. the installed regulator was "made in Germany", installed in a us-car assembled in switzerland !! Too many different countries involved in that project..... :D

The regulator connections fit only one way as long as the factory wiring is intact. The ignition wire (that gets +12v when the ignition is switched on) connects to the snap-on connection. The field wire (that goes to the alternator) connects to the threaded connection.

Just curious why you don't try the solid state (you build it yourself) regulator? Somewhere around here I have the address for the one that costs about 6 bucks to build (if that)....

worked for me so far.... not saying the Solid State chip wont melt or whatever (im no elec expert) but when the VR/Limiter costs 60 small at the local shop....and a 5volt, 1.5amp positive Voltage Regulator costs 50 cents online..... if you want lemme know i will dig up the plans... mostly radio shack items cept the Voltage Regulator its self

You are talking about 2 different things. The Cluster voltage regulator is what you are talking about. The Cars electrical system 12V regulator is what they are talking about.
Go ahead and post your cluster regulator parts list and other info.

Hello,

I replaced the voltage regulator and the Headlight switch. Instrumentpanel light works now, but the voltage in the system is not stable. The hand of the alternator instrument is moving while driving. No changes there. I also made a ground cable from the alternator to the batterie and from there to the regulator. When the headlights are on the light intensity goes a little up and down / up and down ....
The pre owner replaced the alternator. If he installed a alternator with a higher output, could that be the problem and the regulator has a lot work to do ....

No, a higher-output alternator wouldn't cause this problem. A faulty alternator, however, can. So can poor (dirty/corroded) connections and wires to the voltage regulator and alternator.
