Not sure if this is correct board, but where this is more of a mechanical than wiring Q I landed here. I just need a quick conformation on this. Can a points distributer, if in good shape, be converted to EI by striping the points & condenser, and replacing with a reluctor & pick-up? Or is an electronic distributer a whole different beast from its points ancestor? |

The only thing that is common is the body (and then you have to use a dremel because the lead wire for the EI uses a 'notch' in the body, and the points is a single wire connection), gear, bushings. The only "EI" conversion for points is those kits that replace the points plate with an electronic 'feeler' module. For the most part: Points distributors have: A governor with a nub that opens and closes the points. The mainshaft, has two fixed arms for the springs. Single lead wire Sometimes an oiler cap on body Points pickup plates use a vacc. advance can that is like the V-8 cans the arm is bent differently. Usually came with two equal sized heavy springs. EI distributors: No bumper block on governor, the reluctor "star" is removable No oiler nub on body Dual lead wires from pickup coil Mainshaft has two eccentrics that the springs hook to and can be adjusted by an 11/32 wrench to limit your spring rate Usually use two different springs, one light one, one with a 'loop' Vacc. advance can uses an EI only style arm. -D.Idiot |

Thanks guys. That above mentioned contraption must have been what I was recalling. I know most posts here direct one to find an EI distributor; I had to ask.As I recall from spring of '08's dismantling and re-curving my distributor containing 7R vac. & 11R gov., it dose not have a provision for an 11/23" wrench to limit spring rate. The reluctor dose press on & off, and there is an oil felt in center of shaft. I had assumed the rig was an adaptation from points. |

wjajr, On the your distributor (points type) it is better to go with the latest Pertonix module. It has the same features as the HEI with variable dwell. The MOPAR EI distributors are unique......and interesting to tune. |

Here's something for you to consider: http://www.gofastforless.com/ignition/electronic.htm I have not yet tried this myself. |

wjajr, I replaced my distributor with an NOS one from Old Car Parts Northwest as seen in my sig. The old one is a reman unit that worked OK when I pulled it but I don't know more about it than that. Given that you have done recurves etc you are way ahead of me on dizzy stuff. If you don't have an EI dizzy and you want one I can send you my old one. I don't have the other stuff just the dizzy. Let me know if you need it. |
