I have posted several times about only using R-12 or R-134a in auto A/C units. I just pulled this from a Four Seasons info e-mail.

Blend Refrigerants

There are many blend refrigerants being marketed for automotive A/C use. It is and has always been the policy of Four Seasons that if any refrigerant other than R12 or R134a is used in any of our products, the warranty is void.

There are many common sense reasons not to use a blend refrigerant:

The OEMs do not use any blend in the manufacture of new vehicles; they only use R12 or R134a
The blended components tend to fractionate or come apart and each component will leak out under different circumstances
The term blend indicates that there are several components that make up the refrigerant; R12 and R134a are NOT blends
When a blend is extracted from a system, it may not be the same makeup as when it was installed
Refrigerant identifiers can not identify the various blend refrigerants other than the fact that it is a contaminate
Each refrigerant MUST have a unique set of fittings and labels; each refrigerant mush have its own recovery station; the refrigerant must then be sent back to the manufacturer for recycling
When R134a came into being, we had to double our guage and shop equipment inventory; this expense is required for each refrigerant used
Most blends contain some butane or propane; some blends contain R22; some blends require that all hoses be replaced; most blends require XH9 desiccant that is not available in automotive dryers

Most automotive air conditioning compressor manufacturers and re-manufacturers allow only R12 and R134a to be used in their products.

It is the policy of Four Seasons that the use of ANY refrigerant other than R12 or R134a will VOID the warranty of our products.

I wonder why they even sell the other stuff. The parts stores are full of blend crapola.

Easy: the vendors are greedy and unscrupulous, and the customers are ignorant, gullible, and cheap.

It's not only the refrigerants. To me the biggest problem is the "SEALERS".

80% of the time sealers do not cure the leak. They just lie in wait, in the system, to contaminate the recovery equipement of the unsuspecting profesional service tech. Not only that, now the A/C system is probably totally trashed, and just about every component has to be replaced, not just the original single leaking component. If you could see what the sealer does to the system, you would think twice about using it.

PS: SSDan, If I recall, you belong to the IATN (as do I). There is a good picture in the archives, of a compressor that had sealent in it. Do you think you could find it, and post it in this thread?

Oof. I think I recall that pic, but it'll probably take some pretty fancy searching to find it. I'll work on it.

Looks like I hit a snag: I can't search the archives 'cause my membership isn't a high enough (cost) grade to do so. :-(
