Hi all,

I bought this carb as part of a '77-80 "Super Six" setup a few years ago. I'm now thinking it may not be from a slant 6 at all, but possibly an earlier year V8. Can anyone ID it from these photos? The cast in numbers on the side of the fuel bowl in the first pic say "O-2425". Thanks for any help.

Roger

Well. I'd say its at least a late 70's bbd. the accelerator pump isn't sitting atop like earlier carbs. I have never seen a super six specific carb, so it maybe a super six carb. Or it's off a 318. I think the 318 model has small holes in the throttle butterflies for idling quality. got a pic of them throttle plates?

Here's the only photo I currently have that shows a throttle plate. Is that the hole you're talking about, right below the shaft?

That is a V-8 carb (hole in the throttle plate and straight PCV pipe).

You should be able to get it to work, but you will want to modify the choke linkage to work with the slant six choke pulloff as is discussed HERE.

There are internal differences between the slant six and the 318 BDs, but lots of folks have used 318 BBDs with no problems on slants. Personally, I prefer to use the carb designed for the application whenever possible.

That's kind of what I thought. Thanks very much for the confirmation.

V8 carbs will run finw. I couldn't see the hole in the butterfly or throttle plate. Not all the V8's have the hole in the blade.

I have ran nothing but 2280-318 model Holley's or BBD's. I have rebuilt 2 of those super six carbs. Just haven't ren them yet.

Best MPG I have had was 22.

The super sixes have a thicker area on the flat part on the top.

Still trying to figure your rich running problem?

Yes, I am. Yesterday I backed out the metering rod adjusting screw 2 full turns to see what it would do. Drove it a few miles and it ran fine. I need to go fill up the tank, put some miles on it, and see if my mileage improves any. I haven't been able to check the main jets yet (have to take the carb off for that, and I just haven't had the time).

Thanks for all the help so far, I appreciate it.

Well, there's probably a fine line between bravery and stupidity. I have no idea what kind of effect this will have. But it's already running very rich, and I had to start somewhere.

Try a GP Sorenson 96-578. I think that is the number. My sweetie has my keys to the shop where all my kits are. I happened to have the instructions from one in the house.

Or just order a kit for a 78 225 2bbl Aspen

Fab64 I see in the instructions the gap on the metering rod tree (step-up piston) is 1/32". It says a bigger gap will lean things out. That sounds wrong to me.

I need to put one in my hands top check that, make sure it isn't a misprint. Kind of the opposite of a Thermoquad.
