I am new to the world of the leaning tower of power and have a few ?.

First I know I have a heat sink issue with the carb. The car runs great when cold or on the freeway but once I hit stop and go the idle goes to crap and the carb will stumble and stall. I am going to do the fuel line mod first but would like to add a thick base gasket. Does anyone have a part # for the Holly 1 brl? Secondly does any one have the procedures for making and installing the under carb heat shield?
thx and hope to hear from someone soon.

Diego

Hi Ted. Welcome to the board. :D

Can't help ya much with 1bbl stuff. I haven't had a Slant with less than a 4 bbl for years.

The 1bbl Holley is a 1920 model carb. Aggressive Ted on this board made a good heat shield for his 1920.

Hi Diego,

Welcome to the Forum! There are thicker base gaskets. I've found them in kits, and in the single gasket bins at various Auto Parts Stores.

One thing to watch when you install the thicker gasket; the hold down bolts should be checked from time to time to make sure the carb is still sealed to the manifold. After the gasket has been heat cycled half a dozen times the issue should resolve itself. It can be the source of a major vacuum leak if not addressed.

Holley offered an Economaster 1920 back in the day. SlantSixDan had NOS 1920's and 1920 Economasters at one time, though I don't know if he still has any. I picked up one of the NOS Economasters several years ago, and it's been used on at least one of THOR's cars. It's slated to go on my wife's '63 Dart GT when that stalled project gets going again.

The other Holley 1 bbl was the 1945. It is not as highly rated as the 1920 for the application. The other 1 bbl carburetor was the Carter BBS. I have an old one, but have not played with it yet.

Get a carb rebuild kit and go through the carb. to be sure it is clean inside and adjusted correctly. Change the fuel filter.
Pay close attention to the needle / seat, I "micro-polish" the brass seat to ensure a fuel-tight seal.
Check the float carefully or simply replace it.
Drop the float level lower then spec... get the float level as low as you can without fuel starvation, when going around hard corners. (1/8 inch lower then spec works for most vehicles)

If you continue to have hot re-start problems, add a vapor return / pressure bleed-off line.

Thx guys, just to clarify, I do not have problems starting even when extremely hot, just the idle goes to crap and the carb will stumble upon acceleration.

Have you lashed the valves yet Ted?

Very important with this engine. Get the valves adjusted, then look at ignition, then carburetor.

Poor carburetors. They get blamed for a great many issues. Sometimes accurately, most times not.

Sounds like your heating up and the lash is too tight.

Is this a motor that can have the valves adjusted? Or is it a hydraulic one?

OK, set the lash, had a couple of exh too tight and a couple of intakes too loose, Did both the fuel line and the heat shield under the carb mod with a single gasket under the shield and a double gasket under the carb and wa la no more rough idle under hot stop and go conditions. I did have the fuel pump take a dump after the fuel line mod!! :x :x

THanks for all the help and lets see what I need to do next?? LOL
