Post subject:  Odd timing behavior

I have my super six conversion installed now and I'm working on dialing it all in. Last night I went through about half a tank of gas doing a 2 mile loop over and over with different timing settings trying to learn what works best on my engine. I tried everything from 20 degrees btdc all the way to 6 degrees after tdc. The odd thing is that the more retarded I have it set, the better the torque I'm getting. With it advanced even a little, I am getting a kind of rumbling growl but very little acceleration when I floor it. However when it's retarded to 6 degrees after tdc, it actually seems to accelerate better with no rumble. Of course then it has problems while cruising.

I'm using a stock engine build, slant six 225 on a 63 valiant with a 3 speed manual tranny. It has the Carter BBD on it which was just rebuilt. I think it has the stock jets in it 120-386. The only other thing I've messed with a bit is the metering rod height.

One more odd thing that happens is that when I have the vacuum advance connected to the distributor, the timing mark actually retards before advancing when I give it some throttle. I didn't think this was possible. I know the vacuum canister works because I hooked up a vacuum pump to it and it advances the timing properly. The mechanical advance also works fine.

Any ideas?

It would have been nice to of degreed the cam. Sounds like a tooth off but I hope not. Maybe just a tooth off on the distributor.

At idle, when you disconnect your vacuum advance, does the timing retard?

Restab the distributor, then re-time it. It sounds like your off a tooth there like Ted suggested. Your vacuum advance can should do nothing at idle. You probably can't get the timing where it belongs, and have to compensate with a wider throttle plate opening. The plate should mask the ported vacuum.

If your cam timing is off, the front of the engine needs to come off again.
