Post subject:	Kickdown Adjustment
I have a Lokar kickdown cable in my mostly stock '78 Volare with a 225 and a 904 trans. I adjusted the cable to where it shifts at a higher rpm. I like the way it shifts now, but I don't want to burn up the trans. It shifts to second at about 25 mph, and then to third at around 40 to 45 mph, depending on how heavy my right foot is. I don't have a tach, is there anything I should be careful of? Thanks!

that whole "when it shifts" varies greatly by your right foot, as long as iyou have something connected between the carb and that lever on the trans. . Without it, it would be in 3rd by oh 20 or so, regardless of amount of gas pedal pressure. but yeah you can futz with it, and vary the shift spacing, at same "pedal presssure" (throttle opening) as well as the highest road speed at which you can floor-it and get a 3-2 kick down for "passing gear". As long as you have something hooked up and varying that trans lever position as you vary the throttle opening, while not maybe what would be "text book ideal", the fact the it is not shifting like there's "nothing there" (as I described above), helps the trans live longer, than if there WAS nothing there. There are charts for this very thing in the FSM, what engine/what gear pertaining to "expected road speed" for each shift; and there is no "set" exact speed for any of them but a "range" in which that shift should occur. I hope this makes sense.
