Is there an easy way to tell if you have a hydro cam or mechanical cam? I have a Lunati cam I bought at Carlisle about 10 years ago. It was new but had no card with it. I figured I could look up the numbers and tell what it was. Long and short is the only way they could tell me what I have was to send it back and I never did. Fast forward. I want to put this cam in a hydro motor and swap over to mechanical valve gear but I don't know what it is for? The valve lift is only about .400 so it is small but it is new and I have it, so I was going to use it. The only thing that looks a bit odd to me is that the exhaust lobe appears to be open quite a bit longer than another cam I have on hand. The exhaust lobe is almost flat at full open. I'm sure one of you experts can help me.

Is there a manufacturer's name or any numbers on the "butt ends" of the cam? (they likely used someone else to grind theis cam)

You already know the answer... send it to a cam grinder and have them run a profile sheet on that cam.

I know that I know, you Know! I just wanted to install it this weekend. There are numbers and letters on the end and when I called the manufacturer they said that those were not good numbers. At least they could not recognize them. I think Lunati was sold to someone else?

Anyway I didn't know if there was a easy identifier or not. Sounds like or not.

You can install it and use a degree wheel & a dial indicator to plot what it is... but you will spend a few hours doing that work.
