Post subject:  engines running but needs some help

well after all the fun of adjusting valves we got the engine going good
the problem were having is we now have an exhaust leak and when we get the idle set in park and shift to drive the car wants to die and usually does
could the exhaust leak help cause this?
im not sure where the leak is but im guessing its a donut that needs replacing
but i might replace the exhaust/intake gasket anyway since its looks shot

Not usually.

There are no donut gaskets. There's a flat gasket where the exhaust pipe connects to the manifold. Another gasket where the two manifolds connect together. And the gasket at the head.

There are pictures of them HERE.

Gasket replacement is sometimes not-so straight forward. Expect broken bolts and studs. You can read all about it HERE.

well theres no broken bolts or anything obvious
the only free flowing exhaust or vapor is where the pcv valve is...my buddy broke it accidently so its vented into the atmosphere now
but that wouldnt explain why the cab is heavy with fumes after maybe driving 10 miles
if i could get it not to produce such fumes id be driving it everyday
even if it is redneck driving(2 feet with an auto)

What year engine is this?
Did you plug the PCV line to the carb?
If you didn't plug the line, I don't see how the engine could run.
That would be a huge vacuum leak.

the carbs all plugged up
im guessing its the venting from the valve cover which makes it smell

do these engines run warm?
ever since i got this car its run warm
and since i broke a piece of the a/c,heating hose and had to bypass everything it isnt running as hot

On hot days my engine runs right at the thermostat setting 180 degrees, the needle on the dash is at mid point. On cold days, 55 to 60 degrees, the gauge stays at the 1/4 to 1/3 point.
