Probably a vacuum leak on the intake gasket, carb or a cracked/missing vacuum hose.

What is it timed at?

How long has it been running like this?

Is this a stock engine internally? or do you have a after market high left long duration cam?

Are you saying you can't advance it to 10 to 12 degrees?

i am having the exact same problem. running 10 degrees timing. offenhauser intake, holley 390, headers, comp cams. 252 duration, .435 lift. i can get it to idle at 1000 but as soon as i put it in drive it just dies. i tried spraying soapy water and also carb cleaner all over everything to see if i could find a vacuum leak and found nothing. this is on a new motor. has 300 miles on it. im lost. my dad seems to think the 390 is too small as it also has a miss like it running lean. yesterday i went from 53 main jets to 63's seemed to help a bit but still has the miss. i did get it to run before, but i had the timing at 14 degrees and the idle mixture screws at 3 1/2 turns out.

slantscamp,I have a 0.460 lift cam in mine and it will idle like a top at 800 RPM.It has 18 HG. of vacuum in gear.double check your timing,it would be best to find your TRUE top dead center using the 'piston stop' method.maybe you have the wrong gaskets in the carb,or a passage in the carb is blocked.Do you have power brakes? the booster can fail causing a vacuum leak.

I assumed you have adjusted the valves and they are not too tight. This is a classic symptom of tight valves. You could even just loosen them and start up with valve cover off to check idle.

Cam timing could also be off, but do valve adjustment first.
