I just bought a car with a 225 and the guy told me it needed a valve job. He already has the head off of it and new valves and everything, just never got around to doing it. Well I asked him what the car was doing to make him think it needed a valve job and he said it was back firing and just running really rough like it had a miss. He said it was in time and he changed spark plugs as well as checked the timing chain. He said he got a vacuum gauge and when he hooked it up, it bounced rapidly between 15 and 20 at idle and never smoothed out. He said he read somewhere that this means the valve guides are worn out. I've never heard of this and it sounds to me like he might have had the timing 180* out. What do you guys think?

Sounds like the valves adjusted too tight, or a burned valve. Or anything else that would make a dead cyl (bad plug/plug wire, etc.)
