Hello, What would cause my truck when its cold to start up and chug until its warm? I start it up and it idles kinda high, and it sounds like a tuned big block almost. blug blug blug blug blug blug. Do you think its an Incorrectly adjusted carb? |

I'd check your choke pull off is working and adjusted properly. Test the pulloff diaphram to make sure it'll hold a vacuum. If that's ok make sure that the choke stove is working and opening the choke as the engine warms. How does it run when it warms up? |

Runs great when it warms up. I know the vacuum is okay, I checked it a while back when I was having idle problems when the engine was warm. I replaced all the vacuum lines from plastic to rubber. I think its the thing that connects from the intake to the carb. Its old and rusty looking. I replaced the electronic choke about 2 months ago. Another problem I havent looked into yet, but am curious about... It shifts real hard into drive. Not so much when its idleing low, but when i first start it and start to warm it up it seems to slam into drive.. feels almost like I'm getting rear ended. Do you think that the rear axle pinion gear or spider gears are getting worn out? or more like a transmission problem? |

Hi Mister Perkins, Re your hard shift into drive... check your U joints and your trans mount (and engine mounts) too, rule these out first as these are relatively easy fixes over getting into pinion bearings! Also I'm asuming your idle speed is not too high T |

Get your choke/fast idle working properly before you worry about motor/tranny mounts or u-joints. The proper way to start an auto-choke engine is to press the accelerator pedal to the floor and release it. This sets the choke and fast idle cam. Turn the key to start the engine. After the engine has been running a few seconds blip the accelerator briefly to let the fast idle drop to the mid-idle position on the fast-idle cam. This will let the idle drop to a lower position while the engine warms up, If you put the car in gear while it is on fast idle it will engage violently just as you describe. The previous poster had it right when he said to check the pull off module. If it is defective or incorrectly adjusted the cold idle will be very poor. The procedure for adjusting the choke pull-off and fast idle is in your Factory Service Manual... you do have one, don't you? |

How is the gasket between your carb and intake manifold? I had the same chugging a week or so ago, replaced that gasket and solved the problem. |
