Hi all, So, I am getting a loud tapping, and a misfire/rough acceleration and weak power that reminds me of a dropped valve incident that happened to me in an older, air cooled VW 24 years ago. I have popped the valve cover, and I don't see anything obviously wrong. I will adjust the valves, but I am guessing that isn't the problem. This happened more or less all at once, and I am trying to figure out if I wiped out a cam lobe, or something else. Any ideas or indicators that would help narrow it down? Thanks, Greg |

Greg While its running. You will be able to see a wiped lobe. Unless you broke the head off a valve and left some diameter on the stem. I would think you would see it. Maybe have the wife bump it over while you look if its not startable. Just a thought, Frank |

If you broke a valve head off you will see a noticeably longer valve stem. Also, if you pull the plugs the one that is smashed will be the offending cylinder. Adjust the valves. Maybe you will just find a loose adjuster. ![]() |

It was a misfire, and I was able to trace it down to one bad plug wire. With the new ignition system, it puts a lot of juice into the wires. The bad wire was actually that noisy that I thought was a rocker or lifter... Thanks guys for helping out. |
