No local orange boxes available in sock, as well as no choice, and need to special order one. if I'm ordering why not use our friends at Rock Auto they show four different orange box replacements as follows:
Standard Moto Parts 5 pin LX 101T $20.79
Standard Motor Parts 4 pin LX 101 $45.79 (Said to fit OEM 5 pin)
Airtex 5 pin 6H1063 $38.89
AC DELCO 5 pin C 1900Z $49.79

Disregarding the GM conversion angle, which of the units listed would be the best choice for my 74 vintage ignition system?

Summit gets me everything next day. but they ship out of nevada and im in california. I'd really recomend the HEI comversion but 40 bucks isn't bad to get it up and running again

If you have a 5-pin socket, then the 101T sounds like the best bet. Otherwise I'd say get the 101.

Those are probably as good or higher quality than the Orange Box.

Orange box is on its way.

Ted, I almost sprang for a MSD 2 Blaster coil with resistor... I'll see if the new box gets this thing firing on all six first. Than a nice new Firm Feel PS box, and a reworked exhaust system, oh yeah, new left tail light lens, humm something else....

I'll update yah all when it arrives. In the mean time I'll have to use my XM Radio equiped 2.6 HEMI powered rag top.

Ted: Looks as if the top down cruzin will be limited to Saturday am, another blow-hard namesake, Bill, is due to menace our shores later this weekend. Summer no sooner got to Maine last week, and BAM!, a hurricane blows through. I don't expect much from this but sub-gale winds, and heavy rain; probably won't even need the slick'ah.

I appreciate you keeping an eye peeled for a tail light lens Ted.

LX101 with the T suffix indicates the cheap product line. Mopar Performance ignition boxes and voltage regulators have been junk for years. The LX101 was the best choice by far.

My orange box died at around 2K miles; I dug out the potting to see what failed, but the only think I could determine for sure was that the main power transistor was OK. I put in the better NAPA box and have had no problems since.

As promised an update:

The new orange box came today, and it did not solve the starting problem. Tests show the coil was borderline suspect, so now I'm awaiting the arrival of a new MSD Blaster 2 coil with higher rated ballast resistor.

And, so it goes... Or, not goes...

Sorry, I don't remember the NAPA part # - the ECU is shiny chrome and was about $60. I don't see a part# on it. At the time the NAPA guy told me verbally it had a lifetime warranty, but later other NAPA guys told me ignition modules don't when I brought a Ford module back (but they replaced it anyway).

Is it possible to run a blaster coil with the 5 pin module. Is the blaster 2 similar to the mopar coils as far as the input voltage goes? [i always thought blaster coils ran on ~ batt. voltage and mopars on ~5-7 volts.]

theomahamoparguy: Here is the coil & resistor I got, the resistor has a different rating than the MOPAR units allowing higher voltage to the coil, say about 9 to 10 volts. Ted maybe able to explain further, but it all comes down to Ohm's law, a little higher voltage on the primary side of the coil causes a bit higher voltage on the high tension side to feed the plugs.

Yes, I ran the B2 for about a year or so then got bold and cut the pin 3 wire and threw the old resistor away and wired in the Blaster 2 resistor that came with the coil. The chrome Blaster 2 coil is the chrome Chrysler coil you see in Summit and Jeg's. I asked the MOPAR Direct Connection rep at the last MOPAR show, "who made their coil"? It's a Blaster 2 marked up.

The 3 ohm Pertronix coils can run with out the resistor to a full 12 volts. Those are the only ones I know of for sure that can. They have three or four coils in their line with the 3 ohm rating.
