904 LA tranny id 2538473 later model

the starter is spinning but the pinion is not engaging the flywheel

Anyone have any possible reasons as to why this could be?

thanks so much. God Bless

my guess the starter is junk cheaper and easier to go buy a new one than to try and rebuild

Possibly worn starter gear and/or worn ring gear.

If you are stuck try this: WITH THE IGNITION OFF AND KEY OUT, spin the fan by hand a little bit then try to start the engine.

Sounds like the starter is getting a bit worn out, time to rebuild it or replace with a good rebuild. Good luck Keni

Glass 1/2 empty...
The #3 main (crank thurst bearing) is worn, allowing the crank to move reward enough to prevent starter engagement.

Test by pulling forward on the crank, if it moves forward more then .014, that may-be the issue.

Smack the starter with a hammer. It might just be stuck a little.

It's not fair that Harley guys get the credit(or blame) for BFH when everyone knows or should that the term was coined in Model T days ie;Big Ford Hammer.
