| Post subject: | headlight to gauge issue |
Hey guys,I have recently within the last 2-3 days noticed when I turn the headlights on my temp and fuel both peg to the right & the left turn indicator stays on inside. As much as I like driving only in the daylight I would like to fix this. The car is a 67 dart,& I have replaced the headlght sw about 3 years ago. Also if I turn the dimmer down the indicator light goes off but the gauges are still pegged. As usual thanks for any help. |

it sounds like a ground issue check the ground for the gauges/ turn signal indicator. |

IIRC, the headlamps ground at the radiator support adjacent the headlights themselves. I've had crusty connections there on a couple of my cars. Clean the eyelet and sheetmetal there very well as well as the grounding bolt and see what happens. -James |

Ok I checked the grounds and they are good. Other oddities:they only move when the key iss on either acc or ign & when I turn the left signal on they go back to normal. I do believe the car is haunted. |

There may be two wires under your dash that have melted together, and when the lights are turned on one of them back feeds the gage side if the circuit board somehow. You need to look under the dash for heat damaged wire, and trace out all conductors from the light switch that pass by the gage cluster, and the wires from the six way connector plugged to the circuit board before the fire gods become inflamed. My 67 had several melted wires under the dash feeding the circuit board, burned & melted circuit board at the six pins, feeding the brake light switch, and several from the headlight switch were well roasted. All this took place before I purchased my car, which forced a partial rewire of the dash & part of the engine compartment. Just to be safe you should install one of those green knob battery shut-off switches on the negative post so that if an electrical fire starts, you can disconnect the battery with a flick of the wrist. I have these 7 dollar devices from Wal-Mart on my old cars. It is like garlic to the fire gods... |

Check the Mopar Action article on the topic of gauges. Has mods and explinations about how the gauges function. {like the electromechanical regulator on the back side of the gauge panel, which is most likely the problem} I think the article is called "Gauge Rage". After you read that you will wonder why the gauges are working at all {after all this time}. You'll have to search the web, its on there somewhere. |
