Post subject:  Which ATF fluid?

I need to top off my automatic transmission fluid (it's down a pint). The book calls for Type A, but the only thing the parts store sells is Dextron III, Type F, and something made for modern Chryslers. Which one of these should I use to top off my tranmission fluid?

Thanks

I've been using Dextron III for years. My '69 service manual says type AQ-ATF, Suffix "A" or "Dextron".

Dextron III is the "safe bet" if you do not know what type of fluid is in the trans.

In the "racecar" I switched the 904 over to Type F and don't really feel any difference.

I also use Dexron III in my '64 A904, but Type A is available here (Lubbock, Texas). Oddly enough, it's in the grocery stores and some discount chains, but not in the parts places.

Will Dexron V work? :?:

Yes, Dexron-VI will work (there's no Dexron-V), but Chrysler ATF+4 is my pick of the modern fluids.

Why ATF+4? Been running type F in the van since the rebuild over 100K ago.

The Cummins has to have +4. The Mopar brand at Wally World was the cheaper bottle!

Why ATF+4?
Because it is superior to Dexron (-II, -III, -IV) in just about every aspect of transmission fluid performance, and vastly superior to the ancient, primitive Type F fluid.

That's a testament to the mayhem-resistance of a Torqueflite.

I learned something new the other day- Dexron VI is a slightly lower viscosity (thinner) fluid than Dexron III, ATF+4 isn't. So its probably a better pick than Dexron VI from that regard too.

I doubt anyone would EVER have a problem in a 904 or 727 from using Dex VI- the viscosity difference is very small and those transmissions aren't at all picky.

I've been geeking up on oil tech by reading too much bobistheoilguy.com lately ;-p

DEXRON VI it is. Maybe IV and V didn't cut the mustard.
