I pulled the pan on an 85 truck 225 engine I bought to put in my daughter's 65 Valiant. Good news is that the bearings look good. Bad news is that the pickup was cracked and is now broken off just below flush with the block casting.
What is my best option (creating the least debris) to get the remains of the pickup out?

So if I get this correctly, just the threaded nipple section is still in the block. First thing that comes to mind, is a sprinkler riser remover. It is a tapered head that is made to fit inside a pipe and bite in as you turn it. I do not know if it is the right size or will bite hard enough to get the pipe out. But that is what I would try first.

if the engine is out, turn it over and push a shop rag up in it to block, to catch the shavings and use a hacksaw blade ,cut into the two opposite sides of the tube, use the broken pipe as a depth gauge, just to the treads and you should be able to tap it with a flat top screwdriver and spin it out.

cracked oil pickup tube and the bearings look good? I find that hard to believe.

I wound up welding a bolt into the part of the pickup that was left in the block. It screwed right out.
There's no telling how badly the pickup was cracked before I took the pan off. But it couldn't have had much of an air leak.
