Hello all,

Is it possible to replace the oil pan gasket on a '64 signet with the engine still in the car? Not sure if these are one piece or four piece gaskets but seems if they were four piece it might be a possibility, a real pain in the ars, but a possibility. Any one done this without pulling the motor?

Jeff

The slant gasket is a 4 piece gasket. It *can* be done with the engine in the car but be prepared for bloody knuckles and you'd better brush up on your profanity; you're going to need it.

Are they rubber/silicone or cork? I'm thinking that if it's not cork then I could use gasket maker to help hold stuff in place.

You will need to remove the centerlink for the pan to drop free of the engine. Should your motor mounts be old you may also need to remove the nut on each of them and hoist the engine slightly for k-member clearance. Check the pickup tube for any restrictions while you have access. Have a bunch of rags handy 'cuz it's a messy job and wear eye protection to keep the crap out of your eyes. Safety first. Cheers - M

The side rail gaskets are typically cork but I believe they are available in rubber as well. The front and rear pieces are rubber and are held in place with rubber pull-tabs. You can glue the sides down but the front and rear , especially the front, work best dry. I believe Doc has an article posted that would be good reading for you.
