Post subject:  4bbl Air Cleaner of Choice for an Early A

I'm closer than ever to getting my big engine project underway. I'm waiting on the cylinder head rebuild and the "custom" exhaust is coming along (I hope).

The car is a '64 Valiant. The engine is a 225. The intake will be an offy 4bbl. The carb is an Eddy 500.

I've got just about everything planned except for the air cleaner. I've seen numerous air cleaner assemblies here, and I'm curious as to your recommendation for my application.

It's a street car, more city than highway. No scoop and I'd like to keep it that way. I really like the look of the 10" Edelbrock Elite, but I've never seen it on a six. I'd hate to buy one and discover it sits too high.

Any advice you can offer for a good air cleaner for an early A body would be greatly appreciated. I don't really mind whether or not it looks stock. I'm not a huge fan of the cold air induction style. I prefer the classic look, but if you can convince me that it's a significantly better option, I'd be willing to consider it.

Thanks!

That's a pretty slick looking cleaner. Might be a bit out of my price range if it's like the other cleaners on that page, but it would be pretty cool to have a nod to Australia on my car. Looks like it would go great with my Offy valve cover too. I'll keep an eye on it for when it comes back in stock.

Here is the air filter I have on a Holley 390 cfm parked on top of a Clifford Intake.

MP used to have a 14" cast aluminum finned version that the Aussie one appears to have been modeled after. I used one on my '66 for years. Only drawback was that it was an odd size and replacement elements were hard to find.

They are tough though. I found a leaking nitrous solenoid once when the lid blew off. It stripped the nut off the stud instead of breaking out the hole in the lid.

Here is what that catalog pic looks like in place. I KNOW SSDan doesn't like these filters, but I like the look. Oh, now this has the Offy valve cover and more chrome playtoys, like the chrome oil pan. Overkill indeed.

Thanks to Menko for the hosting of this one!

Thanks for the ideas, guys. Yeah, there's a lot to choose from out there and I know there are arguments for and against a lot of filters. I'd just hate to spend money on a good one and then discover my hood will no longer close.

Thanks again!

As long as you are not running more than 1/2" of spacer under the carb it should close with just about any filter.

Also good to know. I'm so used to the early A's "clearance issues," I'm extra gun shy. Thanks!

I bought a Eddie Chrome one for my nephew ($28 Advance Auto) so he could use it on his Elcamino. In tuen I got his MP cast aluminum one.

You can probably get a drop base no name assembly for less than $20 from a local speed shop. Chinese manufacturer I am sure.

I had a 11" K&N assembly (I think it's like 2.25" tall) a few years back before my dad took the car to Texas. I found this size scales very nice atop a slant. It was a non drop base unit but it fit under the hood of a 62' without a spacer. Since then my dad slipped a 1" spacer in and had to put a 14" generic drop base air cleaner on. I'm going to get a 1/2" spacer and see if I have any luck with my 11" K&N.

Yes on that...
The hood on the 63-64 Darts have a big rib running right where the air cleaner sits making it hard to fit larger ones onto the engine.

I'm using a 9" K&N when I go to the 4 bbl. One of the options I considered was the 273 4bbl housing. It is the same diameter as the one used on the pre-emission /6. The element for these housings can be a little difficult to find. However, the /6 element can be used, just remember to use a shorter lid retainer stud.

The other option I considered was simply painting the early /6 filter lid with black wrinkle paint a'la the 340 V-8s.

IMO the 273-4 and the K&N look best with a chrome valve cover. For everything else, I prefer the wrinkle black. That's my 2¢ worth.

Spectre Performance has low profile a cold air intake that flows 675 cfm at 2.4" above the carb if you can deal with that look. It is the lowest I could find for my 61 Lancer that would not restrict flow. It should work for a 63 or 64 easily. The Clifford Hyperpack is higher than the stock Hyperpack unfortunately.
