Hello,

I have a 1971 Plymouth Valiant.
It will not start in Park, but will start normally in neutral.
I have owned and worked on chevys a lot, so i automatically went looking for the column safety switch, i removed the bottom of the column(where it is on chevys) and found nothing, then i removed the steering wheel and nothing.
Can anybody tell me where it is or maybe i'm looking for something mopar doesn't have!!!

forgot to mention that in park the car des not crank or anything (like safety switch is on)

is it on the transmission? hidden on the column?

im out of ideas!!!

Safety switch is on transmission itself. 1" hex unscrews out with 3 pins. Assume this applies to automatic.

if you want to check first that that is your problem, ground it at the starter relay, check your wiring diagram, brown wire on the starter relay, bottom terminal on the relay closest to the battery is what mine is (67 dart). i picked up a new switch from old car parts northwest for like 10-20 bucks, no one makes them aftermarket, havent got it put in yet, but keep in mind that when you pull it out, trans fluid is going to come out too!

Probly the switch is'nt bad,trans shifter bushings worn or misadjusted shift linkage.

I often see that my '71 won't start in park, but will in neutral, after it sits for some months. After the initial startup, starting in park works fine until it sits for months again. Replacing the switch didn't fix the problem; all looks fine from inside the pan. I assume a little trans fluid works its way inside when it sits for a long time; I just live with it now.
