Post subject:  Should I try this engine out?

Need a 225 for a project I'm working on and I'm finding it difficult to find any around here. When I do find one, it seems like people want $300-500 for a 225 with 100K+ on them. Not going to pay more than $100 for anything with very many miles on it.

A guy at my work said he had one sitting in a 63 Valiant that he hasn't started in 10 years. So I went up there and the thing looked ugly but we thought we'd give it a try. Unhooked the fuel line and attached a funnel to it to hold gas. Didn't have a key so we jumped the starter with a screw driver and after it cranked for about 4 seconds, the thing fired right up and didn't sound bad at all. Had some smoke out of the crankcase ventilator breather deal up top, but that ended up going away after a minute or so. Idled fine. I mean I've had more trouble starting the motor in my own car on several ocassions.

My question is if it's even realistic to think that I could put this motor in a car after it hasn't ran in 10 years and not have some kind of terminal problem? I'm trying to avoid any kind of rebuild. Do you guys think the rings are toast and its just going to smoke the entire time, or was the smoke I saw just crud being burned out of there? If it seems alright, are there any products I should use to clean and flush the motor out since its been sitting for so long? I'm just not sure if trying to revive this motor is worth it.

If the gas in it has been sitting there for 10 years, that smoke that went away might have just been some crap in the fuel lines.

If you buy it I would definitely take it apart and check everything, pistons, rings, bearings, valves, the whole lot.

It might be worth the rebuild process, just to put your mind at ease.

$100 is worth it if it runs, in my opinion.
A compression check would probably give you the most information short of taking it apart.

Remember that the early Slants had the small register on the crank. Not sure if that will make a difference on your project or not.

I would do a leak down test on it if you have the tester. It will tell you the most for a cheap easy test.

Mine sat for 14 years and started right up with fresh gas. The carburetor was shot, but it did drive several miles to my house under its own power. A little of Dan's "soup" in the crankcase should remove any goo in your motor. For that price I'd buy it even if it didn't run.

I Parked my '65 valiant in may of 1992. Never started the engine again. may 2009 my son spins a rod bearing in his '64, well we didnt have the money for a rebuild so I decided to see if my engine was still good. Fresh points and condenser, hot battery, his carb with no fuel line, just the clean gas in the bowl. hot wired the coil, two twists of the throttle, short out the started and the dang thing fires on the first spin!! After some water in the rad. and some warm up she was running clean, 40 psi oil pressure and the alt. was charging! well that was in may and he's still driving the chit out of it!!! i say buy the engine and run it!

Just put it on a diet of Rislone. One quart each oil change and that should clean out the rings. I have done it to several SL6's when I worked at the Bellingham junk yard with good success.

This is the biggest concern,...
If you intend to bolt this engine to a 68 or later automatic trans, it will not work.
As for $100.00 for a SL6 that started and ran... it will be hard to beat that deal.
BTW, what condition was the 63 Valiant in? what chassis is that car... a 4 door, "hardtop or 2 a door with a "post?

It's actually $50 and going into a 67 Valiant. So it looks like I'll be good there. The 63 Valiant is just completely tore up. I believe its 2 door with post but I looked inside and theres almost nothing left on it thats good. I'm gonna see if he'll give me the hubcaps since he's crushing it anyway.

I did exactly what your talking about doing--- I bought a 65 225 that had sat for years-- was supposed to be a low mileage unit( I just trusted them)-- I put it in & after getting the timing right the car is still purring today 4 years later.
as pointed out--- you need to verify your crank register issue-- or come to Kansas & I could hook you up with a 70's 225 that is ready to go . Lawrence

Is the body in OK shape, no major damage or rust?
Sounds like it could be made into a good race car.

I just got home with my newest prize... an '84 D100 with a sl6.

It had been the daily driver of the owner of a local salvage yard. He parked it in 2003 after the trans starting acting up... or so he thought.

It had been mired in the back of the yard covered with black mold and sporting two flat tires. He dragged it out, put a battery charger on it and it fired right up.

I drove it home this afternoon... the "bad trans" is a tight u-joint! It runs and drives pretty nice. 129K on the clock. I even washed off most of the black grunge.

Tonite it gets a fresh oil change, a liitle lube job and a new fuel filter.

It's my new, uglier daily driver.

That makes me feel better about it VDART. I'm going to a swap meet this weekend and if I can't find anything better then I guess its that motor that I'm getting.

Doc, one of the quarters is missing and theres some other not so great stuff done to the body. It's toast

Nice pick up Krooser. Looks like you got lucky with the tranny problem.
