I recently installed a higher lift cam and now have 30 thou clearance between coils on the valve springs. CompCams says you have to have 60 thou clearance. Is 30 enough? |

How many RPM you going to turn it Sandy? I think I would be more comfortable with more clearance myself, but I like to rev them up a little. Mike's happy. I took the 6400 chip out of my shift light and put a 6000 in. |

I was looking around the Isky site last night and they suggest sticking a 10 thou feeler gauge between the coils .....6 coils at 10 thou each = 60 thou. I have 30 thou between each coil.....is that enough? Is Isky correct? |

With that clearance and 5400 RPM, my gut says you're OK, but I have limited experience here. Lou |

My understanding is that the specified clearance refers to the difference between the actual installed height of the springs and the specified coil bind height. If you can get a .030 feeler guage between each coil you should have more than enough clearance. |

Some very interesting info on the subject of "Beehive" (or "conical") valve springs here. The premium pick if going with this variety of spring is said to be a Comp 26995 used in conjunction with Comp LS1 retainer. The budget pick is an ordinary Chrysler 3.3/3.8 V6 valve spring with '92-'98 3.1 Chev valve retainers and keepers. The 3.3 spring, properly shimmed, binds at .480"; the Comps go to .600" lift. See discussion on turbododge here. I spent some time looking at dimensional specs and it appears to me the beehive springs would be an easy retrofit onto a slant. |
