I have a chance at getting a free SL6 from an A100. My buddy, who owns it, sez it's a 225... how can I tell. I don't know the year.

Look at the top of the block right underneath the #1 plug. There is a pad that sticks out from under the head that will have the cubic inch stamped in it.

If it's the original motor it should be a 225. Not sure a 170 was ever offered in an A-100.

A-100 motor should have the really neat driver's side alternator brackets too. :D

i forget how i determined it, but pretty sure our 64 a100 had a 170, the holes were different for the drivers side alt bracket on it than what our 73 block had, so we had to go "custom" on it...
i think it was noticeably different for some reason though.

It would be nice if that motor had the factory trans adapter.
It would be even nicer if you passed it on to me!
:D

Yep! The 170 & 225 were the only available engines until 1964, when the 273 V-8 was added.

Check the 5th digit of the VIN. If it's a B, then the factory installed a 225 in the truck, A for a 170.

An A-100 with a 170 in it had to be a gutless pig.

Easiest way to tell a 170 from a 225 is to look at the bypass hose between the top of the water pump and the bottom of the head. If it is only about an inch long it's a 170. On a 225 it is about 3" long.
