| Post subject: | A833OD done ... sort of |
Today I drove the 65 Valiant the first time since putting the A833OD. I felt OK with it after I got the first 5 gallons og gear grease in it - give or take. But when I finally got it into overdrive I was less than overjoyed to hear it singing me a song, a very whining whine song. Does this mean I'm going to be tearing it down for a rebuild soon? Or do all A833 overdrives have secret musical aspirations? RK |

My A833OD was quiet in all gears. |

I used two, both pretty quiet. I know that is subjective because we are talking truck here with no muting between me and the tranny except a steel floor, so I could hear things hum above 65mph, not comforting gear sound, not quiet like a 2009 car tranny. No whine though. Did you change the needle bearings between the input shaft and main drive? Does it feel as if your gears are fully engaged when you shift, i.e. are you getting the cluster completely engaged do you think? rock 64d100 |

I did nothing to the transmission before installing it. I had to hope for the best and get the car on the road.rock 64d100 I don't have anything to compare the shifting to, but I don't have any sense that things aren't engaging. On the other hand I guess there's no telling. Where can I find enough diagrams to familiarize myself with this thing so I can eventually get it repaired? RK |

How big a difference should the 1st gear ratio make going from 2.95 to 3.09?rock 64d100 I have found that pulling up my steep driveway seems a lot easier with the 3.09. I have a little bit over sized tires and the 3 speed didn't like it at all. I was afraid I'd have to look for the smallest 15 inch tires I could find, but the A833 OD seems to do great. RK |

Ross, I recently sent a fellow slanter my collection that had the Mopar Muscle article, a 1980 Chilton's diagram, and the factory service manual, for starters. Just PM me an email. As to going up your driveway, it kinda sounds as if you are asking about good old stump pulling power. I use a 3.91. I have never been "down"from that, but I did use a 4.55 (I think it was) once. My feel is as you move from the 2's to the 3's and 4's, more stumps come out easier. I shudder to think of the clutch slipping that could happen with those 2's. rock '64d100 |

For sure. With the 3 speed I tried pulling a couple crab grass stumps and ended up having to put in a new clutch.it kinda sounds as if you are asking about good old stump pulling power. rock '64d100 RK |

Ross, I have the a833od in my 60 Val and it will be coming out soon for a rebuild as it makes a lot of noise when decelerating in od. I really sings above 3300 rpm also.I think my bearings are going but it still shifts reasonably well.I got a quote of $600 for a local rebuild by a well known shop. My trans is a all cast iron unit so hopfully the counter shaft hole wont be wallered out. HyperValiant |

I am thinking of doing this due to a lot of whirrr in neutral. Is it as simple as removing the input bearing retainer, and sliding the bearing out, or are specialized pullers required? Incidentally I'm enjoying some free wi-fi in the Seoul, Korea airport at the moment. JFK charges 8 bucks an hour for internet. |

And hope not grease!! The manual boxes uses oil or manual transmission fluid. Certainly not gear oil (stinky!). Cheers, Wizard |

Uhoh! I thought you were supposed to put good old fashioned axle grease in them!Cheers, Wizard I read somewhere that Chrysler said to put automatic transmission fluid in them. A guy tried it, had "bad luck" with it and switched to 85 weight gear oil. He liked that fine. I never actually heard of "manual transmission fluid" before. Half auto fluid and half axle grease? Why not gear oil in a gear box? Thanks RK |

Must have been acetone!Your handle - Rug_trucker. Do you truck rugs? I quite driving 18 wheelers over a load of room sized rugs. No help, no lift, no dock. I had to throw the rolls over a hand rail. I got so mad the clerk was scared to death. 6'2", wearing a black cop jacket, weighing an athletic 220 and not a smiley guy on my best days, I asked him if it was safe to spend the night in his lot (NY, NY). He looked at me and asked, "Who's gonna mess with you!" ROTFL RK |
