After an engine rebuild we did our first start which went ok. But the converter cover must have caught a bolt head. Totally trashed. When we took it off we noticed grease spray on the converter. Is this normal after for the first start? both engine and tranny were rebuilt. BTW - couldn't have got this far on this restore without this forum. the information is awesome! Sorry I'm image deficient! gotta look that up again. i'll get them there soon... |

Did you, by chance, drive a pilot bushing out of the crank hub with grease and a correct-sized punch, and neglect to clean the excess grease out of the pocket? The location of that spatter appears that it may have come out of the pilot bushing pocket. Roger |

My son figured it out (we think). He thought we packed some grease before putting the engine and tranny together. I went back to the service manual to review (been six months since) and one step says to "coat converter hub hole in the crankshaft with wheel bearing grease". We did that so now we're pretty sure that's it. We'll check it again to see if we can verify. thanks for the help! |
