| Post subject: | Hard Shift |
When I shift my transmission into gear, there is a loud metallic clunk and the vehicle jumps forward or backwards. What could be the problem? Thanks |

What speed is your engine running when you notice this? |

Not even moving...when shifting from park or neutral. |

What RPM is the engine at(hopefully at idle?), not vehicle speed. EDIT: Jinx dan! |

Sorry...500rpm, the stated idle speed in the factory service manual. |

I was thinking maybe we were talking about a situation where the engine was running on the fast-idle cam after a cold start; under that condition a hard engagement is normal. But if you're getting a lurch/bang even when the engine's warm, at that very low idle speed, then something's the matter — I'm thinking a possible problem in your torque converter. |

I pulled the driveshaft out and the bang went away and I also noticed that the transmission yoke spins in neutral. Is this normal? |
