Is the alternator in a 64 dart with a 225 slant6 single wire or dual wire and does that indicate the number of fields? Also is the an amp limit on an upgrade? I would like to get something new and in chrome, any suggestions? Id rather not swap the regulator or rewire if possible! Thanks!!

Cars made through '69 have a "single field" alternator, which has only one field wire. You can easily use a '70-up "dual field" alternator on a '64; these alternators have two field terminals and all you have to do is ground one of them. You are kind of asking for a few different kinds of trouble if you're intent on upgrading the alternator without upgrading any of the rest of the charging system, particularly the main charging wire. And even if you do nothing else, you'd very likely want to put in a new regulator. Use the Standard-BlueStreak #VR-128 or NAPA Echlin #VR-1001, which looks different but bolts in place of the original regulator and is a heavy-duty electronic item. Please see this thread and its links to get a start on understanding the extent of your project. There's nothing such as a new chrome alternator to fit your car, unless you count trash from China. There are "remanufactured" chrome alternators, which are generally just as poor a bet as any other "remanufactured" mechanical part. Skilled rebuild is better, and the alternator housing is aluminum and takes a nice polish. You can get a new 37- or 46-amp alternator from Old Car Parts Northwest if you can get in touch with them (difficult lately). What problem are you trying to solve with an upgraded alternator? |

Thank you so much! Not trying to fix anything just general improvement and visual upgrades. have chrome air cleaners and many hoses just want to keep things nice! I'll look into those other upgrades as well!!
