Post subject:  muffler choices
so im geting the slant together now and im wanting to have the exhaust run and i have no clue what sounds good on a slant six but i know my plans are 2 inch pipes from the headers to an x pipe to a "muffler" to 2 1/4 tail pipes so the muffler is where im lost. i want a performace muffler but i dont want it quiet but im not realy wanting glass packs so this is for yall who know what sounds good on my slant (BTW)my build is .030 225,erson 270 cam,built head, headers and 4 bbl manifold if that helps.

Go with the Thrush FlowMaster 40 copy for $29 each, they are fully welded and will make lots of beefy sound. I got many many compliments.....from muscle car owners and car collectors.
They do not sound raspy like the Turbo mufflers, glass packs or straight pipes. I hate that rasp and crackle......especially at the track.

I ran the Thrush for 7 years and it works very well with a 2.25" front and 2" tail pipe for best punch and mileage.
If running a 2'' head pipe you could go 1 3/4 out the back for best power. I would still run at least a 12 to 16" 2.5" collector before going to the "X" pipe.........then smaller after the "X".
How long are your primaries? 36 to 40"?

I just changed it to a 18" long body MagnaFlow which is nice an quiet up to 2200 rpm and after 2800 rpm with a 2.76, 8 3/4 posi.
The way my motor is built between 52 mph and 68 mph it just roars! and has tons of power....I am putting a 1 3/4 resonator in place of the 2.25" tail pipe behind it tomorrow. The noise inside the car is nice and quiet (my wife loves it), but I pity who ever is behind me when I put my foot in it....... :D

hey man can i get a part number or somthing for them mufflers soo i could look them up on like summit or jegs
i have no clue what size my primarys are there just stock clifford shortys.

why should i go to smaller pipe after the X pipe?

The exhaust gasses start to cool so to keep the velocity up as it moves through the pipe you need to go smaller, or it cavitates and creates drag and back pressure......not what you want.

The exhaust cools as it expands inside the muffler. When it does, it slows the velocity of the exhaust charge, and you lose any scavenging effect. It also makes the exhaust a little "raspy" when this happens. If you search around this site in the not-so-distant-past, you'll see a discussion about this. I actually made my exhaust quieter by switching to a single exhaust after the bellhousing, dumping into a 2" glass pack and then necking down into 1 7/8" the rest of the way. It also lost the snarly-raspy sound and doesn't drone near as bad.

Others are better versed in this than I. But I did it on my truck and am pleased.

What sounds good to you might bee different from 100 other people.Took me three tries before the muffler shop got it close to what I told them.Its like,,,What color should I paint my car?16 inche stainless glass pack got me close.Mark

well the way i look at it i can try a few cheap mufflers first. i would perfer buying a cheaper muffler and not liking it, then buying a flowmaster or a borla and have a bunch of money in a muffler i dont like.

If you are running duals, no need to go bigger than 2".
