Post subject:  Wheel & Tire Suggestions Wanted

Looking at my new car, a 1964 Valiant, I can't get used to the 13" wheels and tires! What other tire and wheel combinations should I consider? I would like all four to be the same size since I don't see myself lugging two spare tires around.

Get the 14" wheels........ (small bolt pattern or 5x4")

Preferred (but harder to get) 14x5.5 with either a 195/70 or 205/70 14 tire

The other 14" stock wheel is 14x4.5. Can only use 185/75 14 on that.

I changed from the stock 13x4.5 to a 14x5.5 with 195/70 14 tires. (the 13" dog dish hubcaps will fit the 14" rims)

I did a late a-body disk swap and changed the rearend to get the 4.5" bolt pattern, then used 15X7's with 205-60R15's. I like the improved braking and handling, and I like the look as well.

You really need these!

But barring that a set of 14's with 195 70 14's will make the car ride, drive, handle and stop worlds better. FWIW, I had no issues using 195 70's on 14 x 4.5 wheels

WE have 14 inch wheels on our 63. They are American Racing wheels called outlaw ll's.They still make them, and yes our car is smallbolt pattern.

Here's my '62 with Cragar SS mags (14" x 6", small bolt) and BFGoodrich Radial T/A P205/70R14. They look good, though I keep thinking plain steelies painted body colour with trim rings and '60-'62 Valiant centre caps (flying saucer variety) would whisper rather than shout. I'm thinking of 440_Magnum's '66 Dodge.

The 14" stock wheels with the 4" bolt pattern were 4.5 & 5.5 inches wide respectively. I have 185/70-14s on 4.5s on the car now. It works okay for keeping the car off the ground.

Wheel Vintiques makes a repro Rallye wheel in 14 & 15 inch diameters with the SBP. I haven't seen any other aftermarket 15" wheel for the SBP Mopar.

Another alternative is to do the BBP disk brake swap. That opens up your choice of wheels as well as improving your brakes. This is what I am doing on both of my A-bodies. The V-8 Demon has cop car wheels with 235/60-15s on them. These are a tight fit, but no rub. The /6 Dart is getting 15" Magnum 500s with 205/70-15s on them.

bigbolt is the way to go, but you can find small bolt 15" wheels. american racing came back out with the ansen sprints in 14, 15 and 17, all were available in 4" bp. im not sure if they are still making them though. my brother put them on his barracuda. there are others out there too.

If contemplating a brake upgrade, you betchya. But if all that's contemplated is a wheel upgrade at this point, then I disagree. It is very easy to get carried away with feature creep and spend a lot more money than intended: "Well, I want bigger wheels and tires, so of course I should go to the big bolt pattern, and if I'm doing that of course I should go to disc brakes and I'll need a new rear axle, so I might as well upgrade to an 8¼", so I'll need a shorter driveshaft, and if I'm going to do the driveshaft then of course I'll want to get rid of the ball and trunnion front U-joint…"

If you think a brake and/or rear axle upgrade is in the foreseeable future, then maybe it's best to get inexpensive 14" wheels and good quality 14" tires for now. When it's time to go to big bolt, your nice tires will swap onto whatever big-bolt 14" wheels you might select at that time.

Post subject:  Wheels and Tires

I began this thread by stating "my 64 Valiant." I must have been asleep or maybe recalling that the only slants I ever owned with Valiants with one exception, a 73 Vart. The car is actually a 64 Dart 270. A fellow club member sold me four Appliance slotted 14" SBP mags and after many hours of cleaning and polishing, I mounted some P205 70 R14 wheels on them and the results were excellent. Will test drive the car today and see if it really handles and rides better that it did previously. P.S. I think I found out what the vibrations were in the car during its 846 mile drive home: none of the 13" tires had been balanced. For the heck of it I am taking them to a local shop and see how far out of balance they actually were. If they weren't the cause I better get busy checking universals, etc. Thank you all for your input and allow me to say you have some pretty impressive rides.

Just my 2 cents, but I'm still running the stock 13" wheels on my '63. I've been running 205/60R-13's on the rear for nearly a couple of decades and I've always liked the way they look. I keep 185's on the front though, I'm sure the 205's would look better up there too, but with manual steering I figure it's easiest to stay with the pizza cutters up front.
FWIW anyway.

Hi:

I took the advice of SlantSixDan and others, and went with a set of BFG 205/70R14's. Then, in an effort to retain as many elements of the original car as possible (and to save some cashola), I reused the vintage 1973 wheel covers. Best of both worlds and the car handles, rides and looks great!

Dan has a great point, when I went from 13" to 14" (sbp) I saw a major improvement in feel and handling. Are my 15" inches even better, yes, but I went through that feature creep Dan was talking about and spent some bucks doing it.

Dan, your Lancer is beautiful, but I think the painted rims/dog dishes as you suggest would look better on that particular car. It has such a wonderful unique look to it, I think the Cragars detract a bit from that, though they look nice.
