I made a major gaffe this evening. I pressed one of my axle bearings on then realized I had forgotten to put the retainer plate on first. Does anyone have any tricks for removing an axle bearing with out destroying it, or should I just take my medicine and go buy a new one? |

David what axle are you working with? I have some early style axle bearings 60to early 63 & 1 later style--- not sure the year on it-- let me know ,Lawrence |

I have pressed the taper style bearings off of onealxe and pressed them on to onother using a bearing splitter. Didnt have any problems. This was with 8 3/4 axles |

Lawrence, it's a late 7.25. I believe the Timken part number is RC35YYR. I have a large bearing splitter, but the rails of my press are too close together for the axle flange to pass through. I'm going to try getting a couple of long 5/8-18 bolts and see if I can run those through the threaded holes on the splitter and pull the bearing. My concern is that the pressure against the outer race will damage the bearing. If I can get just a little separation I can get the splitter on the inner race. We'll see how it goes. |

Put some pressure on the outer race. then start heating the inner race. If you can get it to expand enough to move, then you'll be set. Roger |

I'm afraid any kind of heat will destroy the seals, since it's a sealed ball bearing. If it were an open tapered roller bearing I'd feel better about it. |

Well, I'm using a couple of bolts and nuts through the bearing separator. Working slowly and carefully from side to side it is moving. I've run out of thread on the bolts so I need to either get some with longer threads or put some kind of spacer under them. Ideal would be 5/8 fine thread bolts that would thread directly into the bearing separator but my normal outlets don't have them and the nut and bolt store is not open today. |

David the 1 bearing I have has new departure 881070-- I don't have a cross reference -- it came with some other bearings I bought for the 60-62 valiant axles-- from a few years back. if nothing else I can take some measurements Lawrence |

Lawrence, the early axles are different and take a different bearing. I'm cautiously optomistic that I'm going to be able to save this one. |

David the bearing listed above is for the larger style axle-- just not sure which years 64-& later-- if I recall there are 3 distinct sets of axles bearings for the 7.25-- (60 to early 63) small -- I have 3 pair of these. (63-72?) guessing & (73-76) this was discussed years ago & I think Doc had the breakdown. The 1 mentioned above is quite a bit larger than the 60-63 style-- I do not have a cross reference to check with timken , it is an AC delco part -- when they made new dimension parts--- I'll see if I can find a cross reference ,Lawrence |

Lawrence, the axle I'm working on is from a 74 Duster with large bolt pattern and 10" brakes. |
