I have a 1987 D150 /6 4speed tranny it wouldn't start the other day when I stopped at my grandma's house everything electrical workwed but no starter so Ijumped across the posts on the starter itself fired right up so I thought it had to be the relay got a new one but didn't help same problem so I took it off and put the old on back on and it started a couple of times like it is supposeb to but then back to no start what can cause this could it be the starter itself going bad

Sounds like the fault is probably in the ignition switch, the wiring between the ignition switch and the starter relay, or — perhaps most likely of all — the neutral safety switch. See here.

I don't think my truck has a neutral safety switch as it would start in gear I am going to put a starter button in it for now starting it with a screwdriver is getting old but I do want to get it fixed right but can't have it down because it is my only mode of transportation at the moment will have my '75 new yorker on the road in the spring
