70 valiant, automatic transmission
kill switch in wiring before coil.

got in car, turned kill switch to "run" position, cranked up fine, ran for about 30 seconds and then i tapped the accelerator to get her going, car died. wouldn't turn on, radio dead, dome light dead, everything dead. got out and jumped the starter with screwdriver across post,.... cranked, spark, the whole nine, but wouldn't run. jumped starter relay and same thing, crank, spark, but wouldn't run...

thought maybe it was the ballast resistor, put new resistor in and did the same thing, cranked, ran for about a minute or so, tapped accelerator and carb backfired then car died. no lights, no radio, no nothing. had alternator, starter and battery tested. all fine and in working condition.

sat on the curb and smoked a cigarette to gather my thoughts with the door open (dome light was not on)

2 mins later i look up and the dome light is on again. what the hell!?

got in the car and she started fine.
strange
put the car in neutral and started fine.

drove around for 10 mins and car ran nice

i'm thinking neutral safety switch? if so, how do i test/bypass that

if it's the ignition switch, how do i test that and if it is bad where should i get a new one?

Sounds like ammeter leads under the dash are loose or ammeter is going bad. Disconnect battery before checking...

Post subject:  check for loose bulkhead connectors

That was the symptom my 70 duster had when left in a damp ocean air parking area. It turned out one wire in the firewall bulkhead connector was not making good contact.

Post subject:  Beware: the “Fire Godsâ€￾ have given you a warning.

Check for corrosion at the bulkhead connector, and any other connections from there to the amp meter from the battery. Tighten, clean, or replace as needed any badly corroded connections as these are a source of excessive heat. Install one of those green knob kill switches at the negative battery terminal (about 7 bucks at Wally-World) before there is an unplanned excessive electron discharge somewhere in your car.
