I've got a brake pulling question. My Valiant has 10" drum brakes all the way around. It pulls to the left very, very slightly when it's cold but after getting warmed up and driving for awhile it starts pulling harder and harder. Especially after highway driving. I've blead the breaks, the fluid flowed very easily from each wheel. Shoes and drums look fine and wheel cylinders didn't appear to be leaking. Had the alignment checked and that looks good.

I'm ready to go ahead and replace the wheel cylinders as the next step but I'm wondering if the the drums might be damaged. Do these symptoms point to anything specific that you've seen before?

I am no expert but it sounds like something is heating up. Have you check your wheel bearings? Also if you jack the left front brake up and roll by hand cold and then hot is there any lock up. You may need to back off on the contact for the left side.

Pull like this often comes from the rear brakes. It doesn't sound as if you have a wheel cylinder problem. Focus on the brake adjustment; if one or both right brake(s) is adjusted looser than the left(s), you'll get a pull to the left. This can happen either because one or two self-adjustors are not working right, or because of the way you happen to reverse the car to get out of whatever parking spot(s) you happen to use — the self-adjustors operate when you stop while reversing. Before you do anything else, you may want to find an empty parking lot, put plenty of space behind the car, shift to reverse, hit the gas and get up some good speed going straight rearward, then repeatedly nail the brakes hard. Repeat this five or six times and then see how the brakes work. If no change, it's time to go back in and look at the adjustors to make sure everything's put together correctly and working freely. Another possible cause is a parking brake mechanism partially hanging up on the left side.

I've seen people put the primary shoes on the left side and the secondy shoes on the right. It will have the effect of pulling hard to the left. Check and make sure you have a primary and secondary shoe on each side and mounted correctly.

Many times a brake "pull" actually points to the opposite side brake not working at all... pulls left? Check the right side.

I've been slowly adjusting the breaks and it seems to be getting better. it's not perfect but it's way better. I adjusted the parking break and that didn't look to be the problem.

I find that when I first hit the breaks if I correct the pull as I'm coming to a stop it corrects the problem.

All the brake components are in their correct place.
