Hi everybody! Great site.

I have a 1950 Desoto with the original flathead and am looking to swap it out for something alittle more powerful/dependable.

I have an opportunity to pick up an older 175cui slant and am wondering--with all the hop-up parts available for the 225cui, what (if any) parts are swappable? Specifically, I'm talking intakes, cams, etc...

You have a 170 slant six then?
Most parts interchange, with the exception of the rods. With extensive machine work, the 198 crank can be used in the 170 block.
Hit the Home button above and cruise the Articles. There are lots of ideas there.
What specific build or modification are you looking at?

Well, I have a chance to get one. I'm interested to know if its even worth the effort to get it running well and installed. Because the Desoto is so darn big and heavy, will it still be under powered? My flattie is 251cui but a real doggie. I'm looking for highway speeds, good sound, and good low-end torque...not looking to race it or anything.

Since the Desoto is an unusual car, I wanted something unusual to put in it. A buddy of mine had one laying around and we started talking.

Welcome on the board. That would indeed be an interesting swap! Virtually all hop-up parts made for the 225 will also bolt onto the 170; the difference is the block (1" shorter on the 170), the connecting rods and pushrods (also 1" shorter) and the crankshaft (1" shorter stroke). A 170 can be made to rev high, but if you're after a whackload of low-end torque — which I agree is probably what is most needed in your application — it'd probably be better to build up a 225. Shouldn't be difficult to lay hands on a good candidate for buildup. Where are you located?

As for the buildup itself, it'd be best to spend some time figuring out your specific goals in terms of performance, driveability, economy, theme/appearance/philosophy (vintage hot-rod...? sleeper...? Modernised old-timer...?) and project cost, then post them here and we'll get you pointed in the right direction.

I would pass on the 170 and find a 225 to work with.

I have a few pics somewhere. I'll look for 'em.

I'm located in Oklahoma City.

In keeping with the car's theme, I'd like to keep everything 60s or older. SOME modern (ie. ignition) upgrades would be ok.

There are alot of old skoolers around here with vintage speed under their hoods. Rather than drop in the "standard" 350/400 combo, a good sounding slantie (got keep it mopar, you know) with dual 2 bbls would garner some serious street cred from the old timers.

Since cash is always an issue, it makes more sense than trying to find a hemi. I guess I could put a 318 or something in it, but what would be cool about that?

Well a twin-carb intake (or a triple! Send me a PM, think I still have one) would certainly look old-school. Want it to sound hot? Get Dutra Duals and run dual pipes all the way back (or Lakes out the sides...) Offy still makes their polished finned cast aluminum valve cover for the slant...
