Post subject: | Engine rebuild or rebore or replacement |
I've been reading some of the discussions and thought I'd post my dilemma. I have a 1 owner 78 dodge D100 that I've owned for 30 yrs. 149K miles-burned #6 piston. Engine was quiet and had great oil pressure up until taken apart. I bought a set of rings for 1 cylinder to measure the end gap at various depths within each cylinder-results are shown below. A piston was used to assure that the ring was placed as squarely in the bore of each cyl as possible. Measurements were taken from 3 different depths from the top of each cylinder: Depth Cyl 1 Cyl2 Cyl 3 Cyl 4 Cyl 5 Cyl 6 .75" 0.026 0.022 0.021 0.019 0.020 0.026 2" 0.018 0.019 0.020 0.018 0.019 0.020 3.5" 0.017 0.017 0.017 0.017 0.019 0.020 (sorry that chart doesn't line up properly) My question: No scores in cylinders-honed and cleaned up before taking measurements. I know I need to replace #6 piston-is this engine close enough that you'd rering it the way it is, or am I at the point where I need to bore it? I want to have the block hot tanked, and new cam bearings pushed in while its apart. Is this a ring, bearing, valve job, or do I spend the extra bucks to go .020 over and replace all 6 pistons? This isn't a daily driver-used mostly for cruise-ins and an occasional run to a hardware store. I welcome your input before I make the decision which way to go. Thanks-Mike |

A key to a long running engine are round & straight cylinder bores. You will need to measure for taper and roundness... your ring gap check will not really show you this type of wear. Can you "get away" with a ring & valve job, I would say yes. Will this "R & V" rebuild last for 200,000 miles... no. Will a quickie rebuild get the vehicle running on a budget, yes but how long do you want the engine to last before it needs to be reworked again? DD |
