Post subject:  Fuel door
Has anyone ever installed a fuel door on an early A Body? (pics would be nice).

Someone on Craigslist has a nice brushed Aluminum one (for a Ram PU) for sale and my crazy thoughts began to spin. It's probably too big for such a small car and would look funky but I thought I'd ask for pics if anyone has done this.

Yes. John Pulo in Australia did a beautiful job moving the filler to the top (~horizontal) surface of the tailfin on a '62 Valiant and installed a Jaguar fuel filler door. LOTS of custom body work, but a really nice result.

Uhh...you really want to go thru the effort, expense, and time to do a bunch of custom body work to wind up looking like every teenaged nitwit who thinks a big ugly spatch of aluminum plastered on the side of his Civic makes it into a racecar? :shrug: :?:

If I were to go through the trouble to do this, I would use one of the late 60s Mopar flip top gas caps.

On one of those build shows a few years back, they put a Dodge Viper fuel door on a 63 Polara. It looked pretty good, similar to the old MOON caps.
I think the show was American Hot Rod.

There are small diameter pop-up gas caps for custom motorcycles. A friend put on on his Coronet wagon. Looks like a small circle in the quarter panel until you push on it, it pops up, you unscrew it and fill 'er up. Here's one on EBay item 140341133996. When you search Google make sure you get one made for fabricators and not direct screw-in ones for Harleys. Here's an expensive one. http://tinyurl.com/ygego5s

I like the aircraft locking style caps that are also seen on motorcycles.

Kind of a funny thread here.

#1 the one in question requires zero custom body work

#2 For an online community built on mutual respect, we sure do throw around a lot of slurs if we don't have the same tastes.

#3 It was just a thought and a hope that there were pictures out there so that I could look before I decide.

Never thought such a simple question would get such passion

I have a 68 B'cuda flip top cap on my 60 Valiant but wish I had moved it to the top of the 1/4panel as I do get a little gas splash under hard cornering.I personally dont care for the Ram pickup unit but ITS YOUR CAR and I do like that your thinking outside the box.I am actually thinking about using a round fuel door ,pocket,and first 6 incchs of filler neck from a late model mini truck on my wifes 63 Valiant,but it would be painted body color.

I'm running a flip top. I also thought about the aircraft style bung. I got the flip top adaptor over at forabodiesonly forum from a member. I need to have a friend chuck it up in his lathe and take about a 1/8" off of it to pull the cap in tighter. It went together easy enough. I haven't done a search over at abodies for the aircraft style but I would almost bet someone over there has already done it and posted results/how to's. Here's a link for the flip top. Some people like fancy add-ons, whether it's billet fuel door covers and chrome window visors, or bud vases and polished Cragars. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'd like a different filler arrangement on my '64 Valiant. The filler, for one thing, is too low for my taste. I can't stand up straight while holding the lever.

A flush cap or cover of some sort would be nice, as a would a fill tube that really solved the slosh problems. A locking cap or door would be nice. Nice and subtle would be even better to my eye.
