Post subject:  Where can I buy distributor springs?

I have a 1987 D150 in the process of switching from leanburn. I'm running a new 1945 and an old points dizzy triggering an msd6a and it seems to want the timing to come in slower.

I posted in 'parts wanted' but does anybody know where to get stiffer springs? I am thinking that a mopar performance spring kit is going to be lighter springs, not heavier ones. Member Wjajr was posting about using gm springs? Is this one of those things where I am looking for /6 specific stuff because I am too dumb to know that federal mogul or somebody makes all the same springs for all the distributors /6 v8 v6 straight 4 chevy ford chrysler etc?

I already have some stiff ones from a msd pro billet smallblock setup- would those work?

Thanks

Kevin

You can use the springs out of just about any mopar distributor, but I would try and get ones from a truck distributor to match your application, at least initially.

You should go back and do a search for distributor recurve and read all the great info already posted about this on this site.

Is there a reason why you want to use a points distributor instead of a electronic ignition distributor?

Post subject:  MOPAR distributor springs

radarsonwheels,

PM bigslantsix fan. His kit is awesome and they are wound just like the stock MOPAR springs. They also come with a handy chart which is real nice. He has a excellent selection that will get you dialed in. The other brand springs may work but are not wound the same. I like the curve response of the MOPAR springs. Get Charles kit. :D

I'm especially enjoying duster idiot's posts. He knows all about the stock governors and spring setups and I haven't seen this info anywhere else online. I didn't even know that the limiter plate in the dist. was called a governor, let alone what an 11.5 was. I was still testing the mechanical advance with a light on a running motor and then measuring the slots with a micrometer. I had to learn a lot really fast when I built a smallblock stroker last year and it wanted 20*+ initial. That mother wouldn't idle with a stock distributor unless I wanted mechanical advance up in the high 40s!

Ted-Kinda funny I started posting an answer to russ's question while at work last nite, then had to do a job, then finished it and you had already posted for him to look up recurve. Looking up recurve isn't exactly a lazer beam of useful info, but I recognize the responsibility of a student to do research before he asks the techers a question they just answered or keep getting asked. I ended up trying to condense some info for him- hopefully there is no whisper down the lane misinformation!

I think we need an article here or a collection of links to the juicy posts

Agreed.........and right on for doing some investigation........

I wish we had a sticky on this subject since there has been so much work documented. That is why I said, send me a PM if your having trouble finding info. I have spent weeks rendering everything into a word document.

SL6 Dan or Frank? could you make a sticky please........? :)

For a recent series on the subject you can check wjajr posts
