Hello all-

I have an largely unmolested 86 Ram with a non feedback 1945 Holley. I replaced the carb to manifold gasket recently, and since have been having problems with the choke. Initially, I couldn't choke at all, and cold starts were tough and time consuming. I replaced the linkage between the, excuse me if this is the wrong terminology-the idle cam and the thermo thinger in the pyramid on the manifold, and that seemed to remedy the problem...until today. Same thing all over again. Any guidance/advice is greatly appreciated.

H'mm. You may have missing or incorrectly-connected linkages, or the choke thermostat — that's the sheetmetal box bolted to the exhaust manifold tower with a rod running up to the top rear of the carburetor — itself may be faulty. Me, I tend to remove the '73-up choke setups and instead install one of the Electric choke kits.

Dan- This works for you? I was considering a manual choke run to the cab, but this looks more interesting (and maybe less of a headache)

Point taken Dan. They say I shouldn't keep hitting my head with this hammer, but what do they know. Thanks for the advice. Would I be correct in assuming that I wouldn't have to pump the gas before cold start up any more if I switched to the electric choke? Is install pretty straight forward?

I found that the linkage on my choke is catching ever so slightly on the sheetmetal housing for the thermostat. I have made the necessary adjustments and everything is working as it should. Thanks again Dan and Reed for you guidance.

If you go to an electric choke you will still need to pump the gas once (or even only 1/2 of once) to allow the choke to close and the fast idle cam to set.

just like reed says you wont hardly have to pump at all(one pump or a partial one). i have an electronic choke kit from the link dan provided and mine works great. i dont mind manual chokes myself but i dont mind being efficient on the other hand either. wouldn't be a bad choice to snag one up.
