I managed to pick up 4 aluminum slots for my Dart. I'm not sure of the manufacturer. Over the years, largely due to neglect, they have developed a lot of corrosion and other junk all over them. What would you use to bring the things back to life?

Assuming you want the wheels polished and shiny it's just like polishing anything else aluminum. I would check out the forums at http://www.caswellplating.com/ or http://forum.eastwood.com/

I've done some aluminum polishing and it's generally not too tough if the part has been polished before. You may have trouble though since most Ansen Sprint type wheels were sold in their machined state. This means a lot more smoothing before the actual polishing. If you don't have buffing equipment you're in for a lot of hand work with wet/dry sandpaper and polishing compound.

If you just want to clean them there are several mag wheel cleaners on the market. Stay away from steel wool, but fine ScotchBrite pads are helpful.

I have had excellent EXCELLENT results using Mother's mag wheel polish and regular old terrycloth towels. You will need MANY towels (handcloths are smaller and more easy to use) and absolutely need to turn them often, but Mother's will polish out even dinged up and dingy old slotted rims very nicely.



Sorry for the brand-X picture. I did those rims by hand, using Mother's and rags.

If the rims are really grody with lots of baked on brake dust and dirt, you may want to try hitting them with a Mother's Powerball and metal polish first to get the really bad stuff off, and then follow up with Mother's and terrycloth towels.

If they have lots of corrosion wash them down with Zep-a-Lum it's an aluminum acid wash,works awesome,find it a truck stops/detail shops.Then use methods stated above.Good luck
