| Post subject: | Holley 390 Help! |
I decided to put the quick change secondary spring kit on my Holley 390 0-8007. When I took the spring change diaphram assembly off it had no ball bearing in the check valve spot. Isn't it supposed to have one? The second thing was the accelerator pump arm adjustment. Both books I have say go to WOT on the primaries and adjust the clearance between the arm and the lever for 0.015 minimum. I put the orange cam in and tried to adjust it but the arm is pushing on the lever and there is no clearance and it doesn't look like there should be if I understand the way this works. I have adjusted the arm for zero clearance at idle. But it isn't possible at WOT to get 0.015 clearance and still be zero clearance at idle. Could some one clarify this adjustment? Just as a point of reference I had to tighten the adjustment screw quite a bit to get zero clearance at idle. No fast-idle cam in play and no idle screw adjust......closed primaries. Help! bwhitejr |

The small carbs like the holley 390 sometimes come with a restrictor bushing instead of the ball bearing in their vacc. pod bodies...you might have to check with a light and or a piece of wire to see... Cam adjustment is best done at WOT... the clearance is measured where the spring loaded adjustable "bolt" contacts the pump lever... pull throttle open to WOT... stick in the feeler gauge, adjust until you get .015 to .020... if you adjust it and the feeler gauge sticks back it off and try again... If you wind it out too much or the adjustment is too tight the pressure from the spring at rest while your engine is bouncing aound will cause you to get some intermittent drips out of the shooter making things occassionally too rich for some "phantom reason"... Zero adjustment at the cam is best done by feel...if the bolt has been adjusted at WOT, close plates back to idle position and move throttle slowly...if cam moves the arm, you're done...if if you can move the arm with little or no effort against the spring bolt something is too loose. Good Luck, -D.Idiot |
