There appears to be a range for the setting on the air gap between the reluctor and the ignition pickup. I have seen a setting of 0.006 somewhere but most often 0.008 is quoted. I can tell you this....much more than 0.008 won't work. No spark. There is a noticeable sound coming from the pickup when the shaft is spun with a 0.008 setting. Is there an optimum setting for this gap? And yes, I am using a brass feeler gauge. Can anyone shed any light on the subject? |

I asked a similar question not to long ago,DI recommended .010 as some reluctors have 'high spots' and to expand on what Wizard says be careful of shaft walk from worn bushings. I'm thinking you might have other weak spots in the ign system as I've had MoPar's,ok v-8s,that had bunches of shaft walk and still ran,horrible fuel mileage but started fine and ran ok. Try to move the shaft side to side while setting the gap and see what you get,the noise might be the reluctor ticking on the pickup.Good luck |

Pull the reluctor out and make sure it doesn't have any rust on the faces of it. Check the pickup too. |

Thanks for the replies. The reluctor doesn't hit the pickup and neither are rusty, but it does make a very slight clicking sound. I assume it is some electrical/mechanical phenomemon. The pickup is rigidly mounted but the plate it is mounted to has some play in it, probably due to the spring suspension it sits on. Does anyone have a technique for gapping the spacing, it seems awkward. bwhitejr |

I always just pull the distributer to adjust the air gap. Slant's and small blocks are a pain with distributer in the car. |

You should be able to run .008 to .012 just fine. What is the ohm rating of the pick up? It should read well over 300 ohms. Yours may be week or intermittent...... |

That may be your problem with the low output and the gap being so critical. |

I went and looked up the spacing fo rthe reluctor to pickup in my 1980 FSM. It says 0.006. Just to be complete, according to the FSM the pickup should be between 150 and 900 ohms. That is quite a range (6X) for a resistance measurement. It didn't state a temperature so I assume it covers when the device is hot. I measured all three of the pickups I have and they all measure 161-162 ohms at 65*F. I can't decide if the pickups are all bad or the spacing just needs to be closer. The higher values of resistance would mean more wraps of wire on the pickup and therefore a larger voltage trigger. Seems reasonable to me. Am I missing something here? Does anyone have a pickup that measures 300+ ohms when it is cool? If so, what is the brand? bwhitejr |
