Post subject:  Oiling Hole #4 Cam Journal

Just an update on my rocker arm oiling problem from last summer. Finally got new Erson cam to replace the Clifford piece. I now have oil to the top of the motor. In comparing oil hole phasing, the Clifford 268 is WAAAAYYY OFF!!! Just a heads up to all of you buying a Clifford cam, check the holes before install. Clifford says it can't happen, I beg to differ.

Gary at RAS way very helpful in resolving this problem and he has improved the oiling on his 1.6 rockers as well. Erson also went out of their way to help.

Good Luck,
S Scamp :D

This isn't necessarily a Clifford problem. Cam grinders get semi finished blanks from 1 or 2 suppliers and assume that journal sizes, oil holes, and oil pump drive gear finish are up to spec without really checking them. Unfortunately the quality of these blanks has been sub par. There are numerous reports of rocker arm oil holes being drilled at the wrong angle or not at all. The best way to check is to slip a #4 cam bearing over the journal an see how the holes line up. Sometimes the holes need to be elongated by chamfering them with a Dremel tool. Oil pump drive gear problems are more difficult to discern. Some builders feel that breaking the sharp edges on the gear with a Dremel tool can prevent oil pump gear problems.
