So I have a 73 duster with beefed up suspension and brakes and i am half way through with my build of my 225 slant six. i want it to be able to run quick in the 1/8th mile and hold with 5.0 stangs but keep it streetable. its got an stock crank, rods, and pistons with a erson 270 cam, offy intake and clifford headers, the head is been ported and polished, .090 off the head, 3 angle valve grind, 1.70 intake 1.44 exhaust valves.
I had a few questions about where to go from here.

1. would an eletric fan be the way to go and how hard is it to wire, also what are good brands for fans
2. would i need better than stock spark plugs (like i think different heat range or something).
3. what is a good spark plug gap?(btw i got eletronic ignition)
4. would i need like to upgrade to like 3.55 gears to help the cam (i know im getting a sure grip)

and feel free to point out any areas i missed in performance

Sounds like you've got a fun combo planned.

1. I personally don't think you'll need an electric fan, but if you're hell bent on having one they are very easy to install.

2. Standard NGK plugs will do fine. Some people put colder plugs in high compression engines to avoid detonation but I don't think you'll need to. I've got 0.100" off my head and I still run the same spark plugs.

3. Plug gap......0.040" or 0.045" I run 0.040" with a Crane Hi-6 ignition and it runs fine.

4. The shorter the gears the better for 1/8 mile racing, something like 4.11's but it'll drive you crazy on the street. 3.55's like you said or 3.7's aren't too bad, depending on what transmission you're running.

What carb are you planning to use?

An electric fan would probably free up the most horsepower. There have been may tests that prove this. Below is one and its findings are consitent with others.

theslantingsix,

After burning up (3) Flex-lite and other brand electric fan controllers........
I have a super simple schematic for installing a fool proof set up. It uses a standard GM switch screwed into the radiator and one standard relay so I can arm the system and manually over ride it at any time. I have been using this system the last 3.5 years. I have also been using a $29 16" ProComp fan sold on eBay. All the parts were less than $60.00. Never an overheating problem. I even bought a spare fan at that price, but never used it....

I learned about this combination of parts from a bunch of off-roaders out here. They told me it was bullet proof, I have to agree. :)

Send me your email and I will send you my schematic.

Click on the red link below to check out the pictures of the electric fan setup. Once the picture comes up double click for full screen, slide show mode.

like i knew a flex fan was out of the question becouse i installed one on my truck and i was bleeding every were on my hands by the time i got it installed so thought that the eletric fan would be safer when having no shroud on the fan

Shrouds are good, flex fans are dangerous.

Part of the fun is you have a late duster which is pretty heavy compared to the pre-72 A-bodies. To really change the "curve" and get the most out of the 1/8 th mile and still maintain street manners, you're going to have to get an aggressive rear ratio and an over drive tranny...something like 4.11/4.56 with the a-833OD, or a Tremec.

You should change your gear ratio to 3,55 or shorter, or maybe like dusteridiot said use a very low rear gear ratio and a 833OD that will also keep you running on the highway.

Also for the track I'll consider subframe connector and I think that for the street there is also a plus on that.

For the electric fan there is for sure a HP saving, but since your car is a double purpose car I will try to go to the BEST in cooling, if the way to do is electric fan then Ok, but if the best ends up to be a regular fan + shroud then I will never mind about HP gain or loss there.

Why do you think a Flex-a-lite 15" fan will not be a good choice?
I was thinking on going this way rather than the 4 blade standard fan. I think that they get the job done (cooling) and most if you add a shroud.
What do you think?
