I have a 82 d-150 my i have had a electrical problem with it for some time now and i think i have norrow it down. So my question is should there be power going to my alternator?

I just had problems with my 84; if you crank the truck and put a voltmeter + terminal on the alternator's 10 gauge wire (the top bolt that has a plastic shield on it) and ground the - terminal, it should be greater than 12 volts. Otherwise, it isn't charging.

If you mean that the alternator is receiving voltage when it is off, how did you come to this conclusion? If diodes go bad, (rectifier bridge), then yes the alternator can suck the battery down. I just learned this the hard way.
