I've got a couple of questions here.

Put a new motor in this 67 Valiant and I saw it run before I bought it and it ran smooth without problems. Finally got it in and when I got it started, it was spewing gas out of the top of the bowl vent and out of the bowl vent tube. Are you supposed to have something connected to that? Although even if I did have something connected to the tube, it still would have spewed out of the valve up top there. Not sure why that was happening or what would have made it start doing that since I haven't touched the carb.

So I put on a different 1920 and this one doesn't have the bowl vent tube coming out of it and it started up and worked ok. My problem is that the timing is all screwy. I don't have a dial back timing light but the mark looked to be at about 20-25* BTDC. It ran ok there but still sounded like it wanted to kind of quietly backfire out the tail pipe. So I turned the distributor all the way the other way and it went to 10* BTDC, which caused it to really run rough and want to backfire much worse. Now the other day I wasn't sure if I was on the compression or exhaust stroke when I found TDC, but when I tried firing it up, it immediately backfired right out of the carb and I figured I was on the exhaust stroke. Turned the motor over to what I think is compression and here I am with this problem. I know I can adjust the bolt on the bottom of the distributor and make it go closer to 0-10* BTDC, but thats only going to make the rough running worse. Does this sound like I'm on the wrong TDC?

Sunk float or stuck-open inlet needle and seat.

Only on '71+ cars ('70+ in California) and it's NEVER supposed to emit liquid fuel.

Timing mark may be off, or you might have your timing light connected to other than the #1 spark plug wire, or you may be checking the timing with the vacuum advance connected rather than disconnected, or you may have a mismatched crank pulley/timing indicator.
