| Post subject: | The Wifes project car.......74 Scamp |
I thought that my first post would be best by kind of introducing myself and our project car. My wife and I wanted a project car to work on. I've build honda race cars and we decided we needed some American Muscle. We found this 74 Scamp in pretty good shape for a very good price. The Slant 6 has been worked on by the previous owners (milled head, milled block, bored over cylinder walls, pistons, Cam, 3 angle valve jobs, ported head) and dog slow. My wife wanted to initially keep the /6 and turbo it but diving into all the paperwork we received with the car, there are no specs. We don't know how much it is bored over, how much the head and block were milled. The previous owners don't know the specs either. We went to a car show yesterday and seen a few A Bodies that had V8 power and my wife said that she'd like to go with the V8 instead of the unknown /6. So I now have to figure out how to drop a 360 in this beast. It already has a 8.25" rear end (don't know what stock was and if 8.25" is any good). Here are pictures. ![]() ![]()

Thank you Izzy. The car needs a bunch of work and the front end is going to get fixed up sometime down the line. I appreciate all those who have taken a peak at the car. |

Nice car, beautiful color. In my opinion, it would be easier and cheaper for you to pull that motor, take it apart and see exactly what was done, and then fix it so it isn't slow. Swapping to a 360 is an in depth job and more expensive than working with what you have, especially if you have a freshly rebuilt motor. |

It's really not that difficult to pull the cylinder head to measure the piston deck height, determine the overbore, and CC the head to then calculate the compression ratio. With a dial indicator, magnetic stand and a degree wheel you can also find your cam specifications fairly easily. Slants do take well to turbocharging, but knowing the static compression ratio and valve timing is crucial for best results. The 8.25 is a good rear axle. Considerably stronger than the 7.25. What I'd like to know is if you're after a specific 1/4 mile ET or just "faster". We've got a board member that dipped into the 11s with his turbocharged Dart and other than a valve spring change the long block was stock. Another board member runs low 11s in his turbo '66 Valiant. |

Beautiful car, but understand that it's kind of a slap in the face to post to a slant six website and tell us how you're planning a V-8 swap... Best of luck. |

I don't mean to "slap" anyone. My intentions were to fix up the /6 and really wanted to. I may still go down the Turbo 6 route and I'm not set on an 8 in the car. I love turbo but feel it is more convenient to find heads and parts for a 360 Magnum versus a /6. I'm still deciding and my wife in anxious to just rip everything out of the car. Sorry if you were a bit offended by my original post, that wasn't my intention at all. Best of luck. Joshie225- I do have the specs on the cam (found the paperwork for it). We aren't really looking for drag racing are we are looking for "faster." Thank you to everyone who has replied and taken a look at the car. I still have a bunch to learn about American made muscle as I've only ever built Honda race motors and I look forward to talking with you all about these great vehicles. *Rogue |
