Hello everyone, I just joined up and figured I should just throw out a new guy question.

Well I have an 86 D-150 with a 225 and it burns oil like a whaling ship, plain and simple. It goes through a quart of 15w40 about every week when driven arround town. It dosent leave a big cloud when you take off, it only leaves a few drops in the driveway because the oil pan is orriginal. The compression is at 110psi across the board. On top of this the lean burn has made it a slug.

Now I have 318 and 727 auto from a junked out truck sitting in the garage and its starring me down, and you know I like horsepower, but I also love low end torque and reliability of the 225.

What to do?

Keep the six, ditch the lean burn, check your valve stem seals and valve guides.

Yeah I've got to agree, I had a 318 in a 79 d150 and now have a 225 in an 82 d150, Im much happier with the slant motor.

Lusting after that 318 is akin to thinking about extra marital sex,SHAME!!
Although since the 318 is in the 'family' maybe it would be like cheating on your wife with your sister inlaw? Well it is a good family and a young mans gota do what he's gota do.There is the whole issue about how it's a little bit different but still fits and all, hhhmmm,I don't know it's a tuff decision.I think you'd be better off fixing the slant(the little woman)and maybe getting another rig(the mistress) for the 318.

318 over /6... /6
360 over /6... 360

if you want more power get a 360. the 318 isn't gonna be worth the headache of swapping over. the 360 is gonna kill your gas mileage.

What I was going to say. When faced with the same choice, I chose to keep the slant rather than swap in a recently rebuilt polysphere 318. It was very tempting, but I didn't want to swap out all the other junk that goes with a transplant. Besides, all the guys at work come out to marvel at the guy ballsy enough to slap an industrial slant from a forklift into his truck!

Well the slant six is going to stay because winter has arrived in Michigan and the truck is currently used by my dad for firewood duty.

I will probablly get a vacume advance distributor and junk the lean burn, and if that makes a noticeable difference driving I will sell the V8 or trade my friend for the slant six in his dart. He is one of those people who only considers it a motor if it has 8 cylinders.

I also vote for keeping the slant six in your truck. Remove the lean-burn system and swap in the more reliable electronic ignition. A more free flowing exhaust with Dutra duals or headers will help.
Don't give up on the slant just because you have a 318 in your garage. I do happen to like 318s by the way.

If you have everything to make the swap (trans, mounts, rad, exhaust, ect) and know the condition of the 318 to be in good shape, then make the swap. You said you like power. You'll have to build the slant up pretty good to have it keep up with the stock 318.

I have two Vans, one a 225 and the other a 318. Given that your /6 probably just needs valve guides, if where me I'd have the head done, clean up the Lean Burn, and call it good.

keeping that 318 is far too much temptation. Perilous. Much to perilous. You should not have to bear such burden. Allow me to take up the 318. Save you from the evils that know no bounds.

Well Karasik87 I dont think you would want to go all the way to Michigan comming into winter for a 318 that could burn oil like a whaling ship.

Going to hold my cards for the winter since I am at college right now and home/the truck is four hours away.

i say stay with the /6 but 318's are just as indistructable with abuse and definety lose the Lean Burn computer brain and get electronic ignition set up you'll also get better gas mileage out of this fix
